Real Relief for Sensitive Skin

By: Dr. Sapna Westley, Dermatologist
Sensitive skin affects millions of people. Up to 50% of women report having symptoms associated with sensitive skin. It is one of the most common conditions I see in my practice and it is one of the most frustrating for patients due to its chronic nature. Sensitive skin can be caused by both internal and external factors, including environmental triggers, temperature changes and irritants found in products and fabrics.

Sensitive skin most commonly manifests as dry, irritated skin. Other common symptoms include burning and stinging. Skin redness and frequent rashes from using household and personal care products and from environmental changes is also very common. People who suffer from these symptoms are generally hesitant to try new products and tend to avoid fabrics that irritate the skin. As a dermatologist, my goal is to treat the symptoms associated with sensitive skin and to make patients comfortable. I also want to educate people on a skin care routine and recommend products that will strengthen their skin and help prevent future sensitivity.

Using fragrance-free products is recommended for people suffering with sensitive skin. Recent studies have been focusing on the role of ceramides in protecting the skin. Ceramides are the natural fats that link the skin cells together to help create a waterproof barrier. Dry, sensitive skin and patients with eczema lack sufficient ceramides, resulting in the skin being more sensitive to environmental irritants. By replenishing the ceramide levels, studies have shown an improvement in symptoms and reduced flare-ups as the skin barrier strengthens. I recommend Curel® Sensitive Skin Remedy™ Lotion for people who suffer from dry, irritated skin. This ceramide-rich lotion is fragrance-free, hypoallergenic and absorbs quickly. It provides instant relief of symptoms, and, by strengthening the skin barrier through continued use, it helps prevent future sensitivity. It will provide great benefit to people with sensitive skin to incorporate this into their skin care regimen.
